US university gets $20M to create new AI institute<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The U.S.-based university Carnegie Mellon received $20 million in federal funding to create a brand new AI institute aimed at shaping public policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A university in the United States received $20 million in federal funding to go toward the creation of a new artificial intelligence (AI) institute. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a report<\/a> from a local news publication, Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania received the funding for its new AI Institute for Societal Decision Making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The institute will foster the improvement of AI tools to assist in decision-making procedures<\/a> in social circumstances, such as natural disasters and public health events. Aarti Singh, a professor at the university\u2019s machine learning department, will serve as the institute\u2019s director. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said one of the primary goals will be to create AI that is \u201chuman-centric.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe need to develop AI technology that works for the people\u2026 It\u2019s actually built on data that is vetted, algorithms that are vetted, with feedback from all the stakeholders and participatory design.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Singh explained that she believes AI can play a vital role in helping decision-makers and officials make more informed decisions in different scenarios. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers at the institute will be consulting public health officials, emergency managers and community workers, along with behavioral and cognitive scientists while developing and training the new technology.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, Singh pointed out that the\u00a0ethical use of AI<\/a>\u00a0is a \u201ccentral goal\u201d at the institute, and developers and researchers must be \u201ccareful\u201d in the process.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think one of the key things is making sure that we are engaging with AI in an ethical way so that it is deployed when it\u2019s needed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This comes as governments around the world begin to examine the use of AI for policies and the regulations needed to keep it in place. In Romania, the government recently\u00a0unveiled an AI chatbot<\/a>\u00a0that will crowdsource public engagement and needs to help inform policy decisions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other global leaders in countries such as the\u00a0United States<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0China<\/a>\u00a0are contemplating new regulations for the technology. In the European Union, lawmakers are in the process of\u00a0finalizing a new AI Act<\/a>\u00a0focusing on guidelines for generative AI tools.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
